Turning on the A/C for the First Time

accartoon

Yesterday (3/31) was the warmest day of the year (so far) peaking out at 76 degrees. Now that may not sound very hot, especially for the Seattle area, but after living here for over 20 years, I’ve become used to the change in temperatures compared to living in Florida up until 1991. It can get pretty warm in a house that has a mostly-western exposure and we would just roast during the summer, especially with old metal window frames. Never again, I pledged and we had central heat and air installed last fall.

So when it was 76 degrees outside, I turned on the A/C and set it at 68 degrees. Then I realized that it’s totally different than having a portable A/C or a window A/C units or even fans all over the house. Those try to cool off a space by blowing cool air or trying to move air around. Central air actually changes the ENVIRONMENT of the house--which I had forgotten about; it’s a totally different experience, walking in from the hot porch, closing the door and being enveloped by cool air. I realized that the system was not really being tasked, considering the outside weather, but it sure got nice and COLD! Looking forward to summer and how it will work along with our new vinyl windows and tinted skylight glass.
