It's been a few days since I posted last. Just been busy. But I was happily surprised to see that the Seattle Seahawks fired Jim Mora last Friday. I knew he was not the man for the job. The team has no discipline, especially off the field. However, my opinion of the MAN has changed. I listened to an interview of Mora in-studio at KJR on Monday. He said he was told that "Paul (Allen) wants to make a change" on Friday and that he was being let go. First thing he did was to talk to his kids and tell them the news and make sure they were alright. I have been through my share of that kind of grief and we're on the same page in terms of priorities. Of course, he will be paid millions of dollars just to go on a vacation, thanks to his contract so it's not like he will be applying for Unemployment any time soon.
But here is the odd part. After Mora was fired on Friday, it wasn't two days until Pete Carroll was offered the job. That was awfully fast. And since Mora was told "Paul wants to make a change," obviously the Seahawks had been talking to Carroll days or weeks before in anticipation of this move. So for Carroll to say, "It came out of nowhere" is not exactly genuine. I believe things went sour for Mora when the "dirtbag" comment came out of his mouth following another loss for the team. That's what changed Paul Allen's mind about him.
Back to KJR for a minute....For Mora to come into KJR's studios and give the interview he did is a HUGE slap in the face to their new competitor, 770 ESPN/KIRO--which is the flagship station of the Seahawks. Now granted, perhaps the Hawks didn't want their former employee on their flagship station talking about the experience, but the fact they didn't even try--and to consider that the Hawks have leverage to influence programming--is just bad radio. KJR, despite their problems, have made themselves THE sprots authority on the radio dial.
And one more comment...When Kevin Calabro was doing play by play for the Sonics and would be on KJR quite a bit, and even once or twice, very briefly, filled in as a host, I thought the guy was beyond smooth. He just oozed talk show host talent. However...now that I've heard him on a regular Monday-Friday schedule, I have discovered that 1) he does hardly any prep for his show, 2) is very loose with the facts and stats and 3) is very shallow in terms of knowledge or viewpoints---and is a blowhard for formatics and often leans on the producer or another host to save his bacon. He is not a good talk show host. Play by play? Sure. Radio. No way.
